Australian Rules Football has a strong following across the country, but the AFL is not the only competition worth knowing. Several national and state-level competitions play an important role in developing players and supporting local clubs. From the main AFL competition to established leagues such as the VFL, SANFL, and WAFL, each has its own identity and location. Let’s read about these competitions, as they can help with sports betting tips or AFL betting tips.
1) Australian Football League (AFL)
The Australian Football League (AFL) is Australia’s premier men’s Australian Rules Football competition. It is a national competition with 18 clubs representing major football markets across Australia. Teams are based in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, and Tasmania. AFL matches are played at major stadiums across the country. Because of its national reach, high-profile players, and large supporter base, the AFL remains Australia’s biggest Australian Rules Football competition.
2) AFL Women’s (AFLW)
AFL Women’s (AFLW) is Australia’s leading professional women’s Australian Rules Football competition. Like the men’s AFL, it operates nationally rather than being limited to one state. Its clubs represent locations across Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, and Tasmania. AFLW has become an important part of Australian football, providing a national platform for elite women players. Its growing popularity has also strengthened women’s pathways throughout the sport.
3) Victorian Football League (VFL)
The Victorian Football League (VFL) has strong historical ties to Victoria and remains one of Australia’s major state-level competitions. Although its roots are Victorian, the modern VFL includes teams from several states. Clubs are mainly connected with Victoria, with additional representation from New South Wales, Queensland, and Tasmania. The competition includes standalone clubs and teams associated with AFL organisations, making it an important pathway for developing players and experienced footballers.
4) South Australian National Football League (SANFL)
The South Australian National Football League (SANFL) is South Australia’s leading state Australian Rules Football competition. It has a long history and remains deeply connected with football culture in Adelaide and surrounding areas. The competition features established South Australian clubs and also has connections with AFL-listed players through reserves teams. For players, supporters, and local clubs, the SANFL continues to provide an important level of competition beneath the national AFL structure.
5) West Australian Football League (WAFL)
The West Australian Football League (WAFL) is Western Australia’s major state-level Australian Rules Football competition. Its clubs are primarily based in Perth and other parts of Western Australia. The WAFL has traditionally played an important role in developing players who later reach the AFL. It also gives experienced footballers opportunities to continue competing at a high level. For Western Australian supporters, the WAFL remains an important part of the state’s football culture.
